How to visit: Tours offered all week from 9 AM-3 PM; book via website
During the 1960s, Bethel was led by Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth, a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement. The Church hosted meetings for the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights (ACMHR) and served as a point of contact for Freedom Riders in Alabama in 1961.
While Rev. Shuttlesworth served as minister, white supremacists bombed the Church and its parsonage 3 times, including Christmas Day in 1956. Today, the congregation worships in a new church, while the historic Church offers tours that highlight Rev. Shuttlesworth’s contributions and help visitors envision what life was like in the community during the 1950s and 1960s.
