The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, a Smithsonian affiliate, is the central museum in the Civil Rights District. Its permanent exhibits use a variety of media to depict life under segregation in the 1950s; explore the Civil Rights Movement, including the Freedom Riders and the marches in Birmingham; and address human rights globally. Traveling exhibits go further into depth about specific aspects of the movement and the Black experience in the United States.
The Institute also has an extensive archive of documents related to the Civil Rights Movement in Birmingham and around the United States. The archive is open by appointment to scholars for research purposes.
