Known as “foot soldiers,” thousands of citizens in Birmingham participated in the Civil Rights Movement. Some marched, organized training sessions on civil disobedience, and participated in sit-ins. Others worked tirelessly behind the scenes to empower them: standing guard outside meetings, transporting protestors, fixing home-cooked meals for activists, and collecting bail.
The Foot Soldiers HQ is a space for documenting their stories and sharing them with a broader audience. Each year, the organization hosts a reunion for foot soldiers to commemorate the work they did and highlight the importance of ordinary people in the Civil Rights Movement.
A sculpture in Kelly Ingram Park commemorates the foot soldiers and the work they did to make the movement possible.
