On January 12, 2017, President Barack Obama issued a presidential proclamation that established the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument. The monument encompasses 4 city blocks in downtown Birmingham. Included are key sites such as the 16th Street Baptist Church, St. Paul United Methodist Church, Kelly Ingram Park, Colored Masonic Temple with the A.G. Gaston Motel being the historic centerpiece of the national monument. The National Park Service and City of Birmingham cooperatively manages the Birmingham Civil Rights National Monument. This national monument serves to highlight the struggle for civil and human rights in Birmingham.
